Vampire Facial (PRP Facial)

No, it has nothing to do with vampires. The Vampire Facial at Lubbock Family Medicine combines micro-needling and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to stimulate the production of collagen, elastin, and new blood vessels, creating a more youthful appearance on the face, neck, and chest.

Vampire Facial is the nickname coined by the beauty industry. The treatment’s proper name is a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) facial: micro-needling followed by the application of PRP drawn from your own blood.

  • Who it is for: Because PRP therapy uses cells from your own body, most people are excellent candidates, including anyone who wants to improve fine lines, skin texture and tone, sun damage, acne scars, or large pores on the face, neck, and chest.

What to expect at your visit

This non-surgical procedure takes about 40 to 60 minutes and requires minimal recovery time.

  1. A quick blood draw while your face is numbing

The Vampire Facial begins with a quick, in-office blood draw while the face is numbing.

  2. PRP is extracted from your blood

The platelet-rich plasma, which contains high levels of growth factors, is extracted from your blood.

  3. Micro-needling with PRP

The PRP is applied to your skin using a special micro-needling pen, on the face, neck, and chest.

  4. Recovery

You can resume day-to-day activities immediately, and makeup can be worn 24 hours after the procedure. Some patients may experience some redness with light peeling for 1 to 2 days.

How PRP works on your skin

Your blood is rich in platelets that have extremely high levels of growth factors. When applied to your skin, these growth factors help boost the cell turnover rate, boost collagen and elastin production, and increase the skin’s hydration levels. They also infuse your skin with antioxidants.

The procedure also improves the absorbing power of your skin, which means your skin can absorb other skincare products better. To sum it up, a Vampire Facial uses your own blood to promote healthy cell functioning.

Initially, the treatment might seem extremely painful, but in reality, it is not.

The Vampire Facial may provide

  • Younger looking skin
  • Minimization of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improved skin texture and elasticity
  • Reduction of acne scars

Who should get a Vampire Facial?

Because PRP therapy uses cells from your own body, most people are excellent candidates for the procedure to treat:

  • Dark under-eye circles
  • Crow’s feet
  • Fine lines around the mouth
  • Crepey skin in the neck, chest, and eye areas
  • Coarse skin texture
  • Dull or gray skin tone
  • Sun damage
  • Acne scars
  • Large pores

Who should not get a Vampire Facial

The Vampire Facial is not recommended for patients who have blood-related disorders, anemia, or cancers of the blood or bone.

Those taking blood thinners or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) should stop these medications for a few weeks before treatment and for several days following it, based on their own physician’s directions.
